I was doing some research on the animated films made in the 70s based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books.

Now, The Hobbit had a style made up of over-the-top proportions and expressions. Brows were thick and lined. Eyes were big. And, the Gollum character was more stylized than he had appeared in other illustrations. He had gained a frog- or salamander-like appearance.

In The Lord of the RIngs , which takes up roughly the first two books of the series, the characters have been completely redesigned. The Gollum character has become a dessicated-looking elf. And, all the other characters have become much more human-looking.

Strangely, the characters in The Return of the King revert to designs like those used in the hobbit. The frog-like Gollum reappears.

I believe the first and third films are the most widely known, but the poster or cover art for the middle one is the most well-known.

Also, the actors who played Gandalf and Bilbo are the same in the first and third movies, but not in the second.

I'd love to know why the middle one is so strikingly different.
